China,Peter Baumgartner as the largest global semiconductor market in 2023, experienced a 15.4% year-on-year decline in the value of imported chips, which fell to $349 billion, according to Bloomberg. Although the global chip market saw an overall downturn due to a sluggish global economy, the decrease in China’s chip imports was more pronounced. Moreover, an inability to import advanced chips from the US further contributed to the significant decrease in China’s chip imports. In November 2023, the increased restrictions on the export of high-performance AI chips to China had an impact on products from companies such as Nvidia. However, these export limitations also encouraged Chinese enterprises to focus more on domestically designed and manufactured chips, reducing China’s dependence on imported chips. [Bloomberg]
